Our Pyridine Suppliers

We have partnered with a range of chemical manufacturers who specialize exclusively in synthesizing pyridines and their derivatives. With years of industry experience, our suppliers offer the most common pyridine compounds, or can custom manufacture pyridine compounds that you cannot purchase from most chemical suppliers.

With all orders, you can order the exact amount of chemical that you need - with no minimum order - in a cost and time effective manner that other suppliers cannot match.

Pyridine Physical Properties & Structure

Pyridines - also known as azabenzes - are a basic six-membered aromatic heterocyclic ring consisting of a single Nitrogen atom in the general molecular formula of C5H5N. They have a similar structure to benzene, but with one methine group replaced by a nitrogen atom.

Pyridines are distinctive for their unpleasant fishy aroma, and are usually colorless, but can also appear yellow if they are older or impure.

Pyridine Derivatives

There are a whole host of different chemical compounds that are related to pyridines and their derivatives.

Pyridine compounds where an additional CH is replaced by a Nitrogen atom, results in compounds known as pyridazine, pyrimidine and pyrazine, depending on the location of the second nitrogen atom within the aromatic ring.

Where pyridine is a six membered heterocyclic ring containing a single nitrogen, pyrrole is a five membered heterocyclic ring also with one nitrogen. By replacing CH groups in pyrrole with an additional nitrogen, this can result in additional pyridine derivatives such as pyrazole, imidazole and triazole.

In addition to some of these pyridine derivatives, other pyridine compounds that are of importance included 4,5,6 and 7 position azaindoles, pyrazolo and halogenated pyridines, such as fluorinated and brominated pyridines.

The Reactivity of Pyridine

Pyridine can be used as a nucleophile for carbonyl groups and is often used as a nucleophilic catalyst in any acylation reaction, due to the lone pair of elections that are present on the nitrogen.

Nucleophilic substitution is possible due to the nitrogen atom which lowers the electron density of the carbon atoms present in the pyridine ring. The lower electron density of the pyridine ring acts to destabilize the ring, which makes pyridine unreactive for electrophilic aromatic substitution. In order for pyridine compounds to take part in aromatic substitution reactions, electron-donating substituents are required, such as amine or methoxy groups.

Applications of Pyridines & Derivatives

It is estimated that the global pyridine market is in excess of $500 million, yet is expected to grow. The main use for pyridine and its derivatives include the production of agrochemicals, food additives and the manufacturing of pesticides and herbicides.

The manufacture of pesticides and herbicides is one of the most common uses for pyridine, where it is used as a precursor for compounds such as paraquat and diquat. In personal care, pyridine is used in the production of antiseptics - such as cetylpyridinium chloride - which is present in most oral care products.
