Our Ketone Suppliers

We have partnered with a range of chemical manufacturers who specialize exclusively in synthesizing ketones and their derivatives. With years of industry experience, our suppliers offer the most common ketone compounds, or can custom manufacture ketone compounds that you cannot purchase from most chemical suppliers.

With all orders, you can order the exact amount of chemical that you need - with no minimum order - in a cost and time effective manner that other suppliers cannot match.

Ketone Physical Properties & Structure

Ketones are chemical compounds that contain a carbonyl group, represented in the form R2C=O, where R groups are a variety of carbon-containing compounds.

The carbon-containing substituents that are bound to the carbonyl carbon are what are responsible for the physical properties of ketones. As these groups get larger in molecular weight, the van der Waal forces increase, resulting in increased boiling points. In addition, as chain length increases, the general solubility of these compounds decreases, but smaller-sized compounds such as propanone are miscible with water.

Ketone Derivatives

The simplest form of ketone derivative is an aldehyde, where one of the two R groups is a H atom, but there are a range of other ketone derivatives that exist naturally and that have been man-made.

Ketones can be classified based on the substituent groups and the overall structure of their compounds. For example, symmetrical or unsymmetrical ketones exist, based on the similarities or differences of the R functional groups, respectively. Cyclic ketones are ketones that contain a cyclic group, such as cyclopropanone or cyclohexanone, and unsaturated ketones are those featuring alkene or alkyne units.

The Reactivity of Ketones

Ketones are typically less reactive than the similar chemical group of aldehydes, but react similarly in many different reactions. Ketones can undergo a range of reactions, including addition and reduction, under the right chemical conditions.

Some examples of reactions that ketones undertake include reactions with primary, secondary and tertiary amines, forming complex alcohols with Grignard reagents, and the formation of lesser known acetals.

Applications of Ketones & Derivatives

Ketones are widely used as solvents and in the manufacturing industry, commonly used in various applications such as solvents, paints and lacquers. Similarly to aldehydes, because of their chemical structure, they can also be used as intermediates in the synthesis of complex compounds such as those used in the pharmaceutical and personal care industry.
